Session RPE & load

Ask athletes how hard each session was, enter ratings on the whiteboard, and track session load and its workload ratio

Written by Todd Miller

Session RPE is each athlete's rating of how hard a whole workout was, on the CR-10 scale from 1 (Very easy) to 10 (Maximal), along with the minutes it lasted. Rating × minutes is that session's load in arbitrary units (AU), a simple, widely used measure of internal load that you can total by week and compare against each athlete's normal. This guide covers turning session RPE on, choosing it per workout, how athletes rate, entering ratings yourself, and reading session load.

Turning session RPE on

Session RPE is set for the whole organization, and each team can choose differently.

  • For every team: open Organization Settings › Settings, and under Team defaults turn on Session RPE (1). Only organization managers see Organization Settings.

The Session RPE switch under Team defaults

  • For one team only: leave the organization's switch off, open Team Settings › Settings and find Workouts. Turn on Custom session RPE (1), marked Overrides organization, then set the team's own Session RPE switch beneath it. Until you do, the line under it (2) says what the team follows, such as Following the organization:On. Coaches with edit access to the team and organization managers see Team Settings.

The Workouts section of Team Settings

Turning either switch on creates the Session RPE and Session Load metrics if your organization doesn't have them yet (see The two metrics). Flipping either switch recalculates any training load built on Session Load, since the switch decides which past sessions counted as asked. Turning session RPE off deletes nothing: ratings already given stay.

Choosing per workout or program day

The team switch is only the default. Any workout or program day can choose for itself with its Session RPE field: Team default, Ask, or Don't ask. A workout left on Team default follows the setting of the team it's scheduled on, so you can leave a team off and ask only for the sessions you pick.

  • A calendar workout: click it on the calendar and, in its panel, click the Session RPE chip to open the field (1). The first choice names the team's setting today, such as Team default (On).

  • A library workout: the same field sits in the workout editor's Details. Library workouts aren't tied to a team, so the choice reads just Team default. See Workouts.

  • A program day: open the day card and click its Session RPE chip.

  • Many program days: tick the days, click Session RPE in the actions bar, choose under Ask athletes to rate these workouts?, and click Apply. See Programs.

A choice travels with every copy: scheduling a program or library workout, copying days, duplicating a program. Changing a program day's choice also changes the workouts already scheduled from it, even ones athletes have logged.

How athletes rate a session

When an athlete finishes every block of a workout that asks for a rating, the app opens its Status report, headed How hard was this session?:

  1. Tap a number from 1 to 10 (1). The scale labels the anchors Very easy, Easy, Moderate, Somewhat hard, Hard, Very hard, and Maximal.

  2. Check Minutes (2). It starts at the workout's scheduled length; change it if the session ran shorter or longer.

  3. Tap Save (3). It stays greyed out until a number is picked.

The Status report with a rating picked

Rating is optional and never expires. Once an athlete has logged anything in an asked-for workout, its card on the Train tab says Rate this session (1) until they rate it; WORKOUT COMPLETE on a finished card also opens the status report. Once rated, the card shows the rating and minutes, such as "RPE 7 · 75 min", with Edit, and the status report offers Clear rating. See Mobile interface.

Rate this session on a workout card

Station tablets ask too. A workout that asks for a rating lists Session RPE after its blocks, and finishing the last block opens it: tap a number, check Minutes, and tap Save. The athlete's ring on their tab only closes once they've rated, and tapping their tab later reopens Session RPE if every block is done. A rating saved on the tablet shows Clear rating and Save changes when the athlete comes back to it. See Tablet interface.

Entering ratings on the whiteboard

Ratings are usually collected 10–30 minutes after training. When a workout asks for a session RPE, or anyone has rated it, its whiteboard lists Session RPE under the blocks (1) with how many athletes are rated, such as "4 of 5 rated". Click it for the grid:

  • Tap a number (2) to record an athlete's rating; tap the same number again to clear it. Every tap saves.

  • Correct Minutes (3) if the session ran long or short. Load is rating × minutes, and stays a dash until both are in.

  • The header shows the session's average rating (Avg) and the count (4).

Athletes marked absent at roll call aren't listed and don't count, and the whiteboard's name search filters these rows too. Rating an athlete who hasn't opened the workout starts it for them with just the rating, and their minutes save with it, not on their own.

The workout's panel on the calendar shows the same count and average in a Session RPE row under Assignment & progress (2 in the panel shot), with None rated yet before anyone has rated and an Incomplete badge below 80% rated. Review opens the whiteboard on the grid. See Calendar for the whiteboard itself.

The two metrics

Every rating feeds two metrics in your organization, created when session RPE is first turned on (or, without that, when an athlete first rates a session):

  • Session RPE: the athlete's rating for the day. With two sessions in a day, it's their average weighted by minutes (a plain average if a rating has no minutes).

  • Session Load: rating × minutes for the day, in AU, added up across the day's sessions. A day whose ratings have no minutes has a Session RPE but no Session Load.

Both are calculated: change a rating to change them, since values can't be typed in, and an imported column named Session RPE creates a separate metric. They count only FYTT workouts, so an unscheduled practice or game isn't in them, and an unrated session adds nothing. Click View data beside either on the Metrics tab to see every athlete's values.

They aren't on a team's Data grid until you turn on their Team metric switch on the Metrics tab, and athletes don't see them in the app. Use them in charts, group and profile reports, leaderboards, and automations like any metric, for example an automation when Session RPE is 9 or more. See Metrics, Reports, and Automations.

Session load and the workload ratio

To total session load over a week and compare it with each athlete's normal (ACWR, the acute:chronic workload ratio), create a Training load on it. On the Metrics tab, click Add metric, choose Training load, and pick 7-Day Session Load under Starting point: session RPE × minutes over the last 7 days, and its ratio to the last 28. The preset appears once your organization has the Session Load metric.

A plain total would read a session nobody rated as a rest day. A training load on Session Load estimates it instead: the athlete's average session RPE over the load's chronic window (28 days on the preset) up to that day × the session's minutes. Days that include an estimate show a ~ before the value (2). A session still counts as 0 when the athlete has no rating in that window or the session has no minutes.

A 7-Day Session Load with its Rated row and an estimated day

The Rated row in the rail (1) covers the load's period up to the date you're viewing: how many of the sessions athletes logged and were asked to rate got a rating, and how many of the rest were estimated or counted as 0. Below 80% rated it shows Incomplete: read a light week there as missing ratings, not an easy one. Unrated sessions under About explains the estimate.

Estimates live only in the training load; the Session Load metric holds rated sessions only. Changing one workout's or program day's choice after the fact re-estimates only the current period, overnight.

Trends on session RPE

To watch how hard athletes find their training, create a trend on Session RPE: click Add metric, choose Trend, pick Session RPE as the metric to follow, and choose Rolling average with a 7-day window, or Change from baseline to flag athletes rating sessions harder than usual. A trend skips days without a rating rather than counting them as zero, and doesn't estimate. For totals, use a training load. See Trends.

Asking Flex

Flex sets the choice on library workouts, program days, and calendar workouts, even logged ones, and undo puts the earlier choice back: "Turn on session RPE for Friday's lift". It also reads ratings and session load: "How hard has this week been for @Varsity?" It says how many sessions were rated, but a workload ratio Flex works out itself counts an unrated session as 0, where your training load estimates it. Flex doesn't change the organization or team switches and never enters a rating for an athlete. See Flex.

Why athletes weren't asked

  • The workout chose Don't ask, or it's on Team default and the team's setting is off. On the calendar the choice says which, such as Team default (Off).

  • The team overrides the organization: Custom session RPE is on with the team's own switch off.

  • The athlete hasn't logged anything in the workout. Rate this session appears once they've logged a set, and the status report opens when every block is done. On a station tablet, Session RPE is always listed after the blocks.

  • The workout is on another team's calendar. An athlete on two teams is asked by the team the workout is scheduled on.
