Use tablets to deliver athlete training at stations throughout your facility

Written by Todd Miller

Station tablets let athletes follow and record their own workouts on shared tablets set up around your weight room. This article covers setting up a facility and its stations, logging a tablet in, how athletes train at a station, automatic station assignments, and what the coach site looks like on an iPad.

Facilities

A facility is a training space with a set number of stations, and each station is one tablet. Facilities belong to the organization, so only managers can create or change them.

The Facilities tab in Organization Settings

  1. Click Organization Settings at the bottom of the left sidebar, then the Facilities tab (1).

  2. Click New Facility (2).

  3. Enter a Name and a Station count. The count creates the stations, numbered from 1.

  4. Set the Station assignment switches, then click Save.

The switches:

  • Automatic station assignments? Athletes are placed at a station when you start the workout from the whiteboard. With it off, athletes add themselves at each tablet. The facilities table shows which mode each facility uses as Auto-assign or Self-assign.

  • Allow coaches to create login tokens? Lets coaches who aren't managers generate a token for this facility. Managers always can.

  • Scope roster by user role? Shown when coach tokens are on. A coach signed in with a token sees only the athletes on the teams they coach, rather than the whole organization.

The facility panel with its Stations button

Click a facility in the table to edit it. To name the stations ("Rack 1", "Platform"), click Stations (1) in the facility panel, click a station and type its name. It saves as you type. An unnamed station goes by its number, such as "Station 3". To add or remove stations, change the Station count.

Each tablet logs in with a token: a six-character code that works for 30 minutes.

Generating a token

Managers can click Generate token (3) on the facility's row in the Facilities tab. Managers and coaches can also open the menu under their profile picture in the top bar, choose Facilities, and click Generate token (1) beside the facility. Coaches only see facilities that have Allow coaches to create login tokens? turned on.

The Facilities panel from the profile menu

The code appears in a Check-in code dialog. In the FYTT phone app, it's under Facility access in your profile menu, with a countdown and Get a new code once it expires.

The tablet signs in as you

A tablet logged in with your token acts as your account and stays logged in after the code expires, until someone taps Logout on it. The code only has to be typed in within 30 minutes.

Logging a tablet in

  1. On the tablet, open a browser and go to facilities.fytt.io.

  2. Type the code into the Station login screen and tap Log in.

The Station login screen on a tablet

  1. Tap Use station (1) on the station this tablet will be.

Choosing a station

Repeat for each tablet. The same code works on every tablet until it expires. To switch a tablet to another station, tap the back arrow at the top left of the station screen. To log a tablet out, open the menu at the top right and tap Logout (Refresh in the same menu reloads the screen), or tap Log out of facility on the station list.

Athlete training

At a Self-assign facility, athletes put themselves on a station:

  1. Tap Add athletes to station (or Add/Remove Athletes at the top right once someone is on it).

  2. Tap each athlete to add, or an athlete already there to remove. The Roster menu above the list switches between teams when there's more than one to pick from, and the search box finds athletes by name. Clear all removes everyone at the station.

  3. Tap Update station to apply the changes, or Undo all to start over.

Athletes at the station appear as tabs along the top, each with a ring that fills as they record. Tap a name to switch to that athlete: the day stays the same, and each athlete picks up where they left off. If the switch fails, the tablet says That athlete's screen didn't load. Tap their name to try again. Below the tabs are the athlete's workouts for the day. Use the arrows beside the date at the top to step back up to two weeks or ahead one week, or tap the date to pick any day and Jump to today to come back. A day opens on its first unfinished workout.

With the tablet held sideways, the blocks are listed on the left and the selected block is open for recording on the right. Held upright, the blocks are a row of steps above the open block. Each block in the sideways list shows its sets recorded out of the total, such as 2 / 4. Tap Summary above the list to open every block onto its exercises, one line each with what's prescribed (4 × 2 @ 85–90%, for example), so athletes can read the whole workout without opening each block. Tap Summary again to close them. The switch stays as set while athletes and days change, until the station screen reloads.

A block a coach removed for that athlete isn't listed or counted. When the workout asks for a session RPE, Session RPE is listed after the blocks and counts as one more block; finishing the last block opens it, and the athlete's ring closes once they've rated. See Session RPE & load.

A station shows the athlete's own scheduled workouts, whether or not the workout is held at this facility.

Automatic station assignments

At an Auto-assign facility, you run the session from the whiteboard and the tablets follow.

  1. Hold the workout at the facility: in the calendar, click the workout and choose the facility under Facility (1). A program can set a Facility for all its workouts, and a workout can override it.

The Facility field on a scheduled workout

  1. Until a workout starts, each tablet shows its station name and Waiting for a workout to start.

A station waiting for a workout

  1. Open the workout's whiteboard and click Start workout (1). FYTT splits the athletes on the workout's attendance evenly across the stations, in last-name order, with athletes who have a current injury placed last. If the workout is assigned to a group with its own coaches, each coach's athletes are split separately.

Start workout on the whiteboard

  1. Every tablet refreshes to show its athletes. Put the whiteboard on a big screen so athletes can see where to go.

  2. Click End workout on the whiteboard when the session is over. The tablets return to waiting. Reactivate workout restarts it.

See Calendar for more on the whiteboard.

Using the coach site on an iPad

The coach site runs on a tablet in a tablet layout, built for running a session rather than planning one:

  • The left sidebar has only Calendar, Roster and Chat, and there's no Flex.

  • Clicking a workout on the calendar opens its whiteboard. Scheduling, PDFs and Athlete view are left out.

  • The roster and athlete profiles are read-only: no importing, bulk actions or editing.

  • The profile menu holds only Settings and Logout, so generate tokens from a computer or the phone app.

Recent iPads often ask for the desktop version of websites, in which case you get the full coach site instead. The station screens at facilities.fytt.io always use the tablet layout. For athletes training on their own phones, see Mobile interface.
